Biedermeier Solid Walnut Writing Desk, c. 1830

This Biedermeier writing desk in solid walnut dates to the first half of the 19th century and is a typical representative of the South German Biedermeier with its clear, ornament free language of form. The piece convinces above all through the extraordinary grain of the walnut wood, which runs lively and varied across all surfaces.

The tabletop shows a broad, vividly drawn grain with warm red and gold tones that extend from pale streaks to deep, dark brown veins, an image that rarely appears so pronounced in solid walnut of this quality. Under the apron there are three drawers: two lateral drawers with original locks and brass keyhole fittings, and a central, narrower drawer with a small round knob handle. The apron is kept simple, the drawer fronts consistently pick up the lively grain of the walnut wood. The four conically tapering, gently curved legs are characteristic of the Biedermeier style and give the table its secure footing with a simultaneously light effect. The entire construction is solid throughout, without veneer.

The writing desk suits a classically furnished study as well as a living space that mediates between historical and modern pieces. With a usable knee height of 58 cm below the apron, it is also suitable for daily use at a modern workspace.

Restored in our workshop in Darmstadt. The surface was cleaned, sanded and hand polished, so that the natural depth of the walnut grain returns fully to its effect. All drawers run smoothly and close cleanly.
