Jugendstil furniture

Art Nouveau / Jugendstil furniture 1895-1910 - flowing lines, marquetry, an independent design vocabulary that broke with historicism.

Jugendstil (the German Art Nouveau) is the shortest and most intense furniture period in German history. Between about 1895 and 1910 an independent style emerged that deliberately broke with historicism: no more columns, no imitations of earlier periods, but flowing, often asymmetric lines, much marquetry, mixed materials (wood with brass, tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl).

Darmstadt was one of the centres of German Jugendstil - the Mathildenhoehe artists colony is only a few streets from our shop. We regularly find Jugendstil pieces here that should stay in their region of origin. In restoration we pay attention to the marquetry (often very thin, only repairable by hand) and to the typical fittings.

Below all current Jugendstil pieces. Photos show the lines, the marquetry and the fittings. Detail photos on request. Shipping Germany-wide and international.
