About this piece

This Biedermeier chiffoniere in walnut comes from South Germany and dates from circa 1830. With its tall format and seven drawers it is one of the more representative storage pieces of the period.

The mirrored walnut veneers create a symmetrical, flame-like figure across the whole front, continuing almost seamlessly from the top drawer to the bottom one. The warm golden patina with the dark markings typical of walnut shows best on the wide top, whose gently rounded moulded edge is also veneered. Each of the seven drawers can be locked individually; the escutcheons are brass inlays set flush into the surface. The drawer boxes are made of solid oak. Pilasters at the sides and turned ball feet structure the carcass and give the chiffoniere its clear, upright form.

Restored in our workshop in Darmstadt. The surface was hand-polished to a deep, silky sheen without reworking the original patina. All drawers were checked for smooth running and adjusted where necessary.
