Biedermeier Walnut Console Cabinet with Columns

This Biedermeier console half cabinet in walnut dates to the first half of the 19th century and unites the clarity of form typical of the period with a pronounced joy in figured grain. The piece was made in Central Europe and belongs to the more representative examples of Biedermeier furniture construction.

The veneer images on drawer and door fronts are carefully mirror set and show an exceptionally lively walnut grain with broad, dark drawn flame figures. The corpus is partly solid, partly veneered, a construction method common in Biedermeier that unites stability with visual effect. The most striking design feature are the flanking, free standing walnut columns in curved console form, which give the piece its character as a console cabinet and are worked solidly from the full block. The top is broadly veneered and shows a calmer, finer grain. The fittings are small original brass pulls on the drawer and brass key escutcheons on both doors. The lower closure is formed by a curved plinth rail resting on four turned feet.

As a sideboard in a dining room with historical furniture or as a console in the entrance area of a period apartment, this cabinet fits in directly. It also works as a single piece in a modern furnished space, where it sets a deliberate counterweight to the sober surroundings.

Restored in our workshop in Darmstadt. The surface was cleaned, repaired and hand polished, so that the grain remains clearly legible. Drawer and doors close cleanly and run smoothly.
